While Beavers Considers Letter a Joke, Hollingsworth Can't Appreciate It.
Not so very long ago, Detective John Hollingsworth, of Chief Lanford's staff at headquarters, was frisked of $63 by a pick-pocket while the detective was helping a number of his relatives aboard an out-going train.
Hollingsworth immediately reported the case to headquarters, seeking to apprehend the pick-pocket and to recover the $62.
Owing to this fact, the happening was given considerable publicity.
Chief Beavers, on Friday, received the following communication from persons signing themselves "Crook, Yegg, Blackhand, Etc."
Just what the "Etc." means, the writers failed to stipulate:
"Dear Chief," the missive reads.
"Thanks for the lobster the detective.
Detective coin spends good.
Let us know when the detectives have another pay day.
I would recommend Grape Nuts for the force 'There's a reason.'
Keep your vice squad away from the railroad stations hereafter they might get run over."
Chief Beavers, it is said, is inclined to look upon the matter as a joke, but Hollingsworth is unable to see anything funny about it.
